How to Determine What Strain Type is Right for You

Every single marijuana plant is different. Even when you think one strain is identical to another, you’ll be surprised to know that the chemical composition of each medical cannabis strain is unique and different. There are a variety of terpenes and ratios of CBD to THC that can affect the impact each strain has on you.

One of the quickest ways to break down the differences in medical marijuana strains is by grouping them as either indicas, sativas, or a hybrid of the two. Understanding these three categories will give you a basic understanding of the different effects of marijuana strains. Each category will impart specific benefits, and each category has some general characteristics that we will get to soon.

If you are in the Canton, Illinois area, and are looking for a licensed medical marijuana or cannabis dispensary, be sure to visit Salveo Health & Wellness. We have an incredibly friendly and informed staff who is here to help you find relief from your medical condition. Different Types of Strains: An Overview

Before we dive into the multitude of different strain types, it is important to have a firm grasp of the general characteristics of each strain type. Depending on the medical condition you have been diagnosed with, you may find that certain strain types are more helpful than others. It is always beneficial to experiment and test which strain type is right for you.

Sativa Strains

Heavy Sativa

Heavy Sativas are known for being great in the daytime. Medical marijuana strains that fall into the heavy sativa category are going to provide an intense and euphoric body high, while simultaneously stimulating creativity. Some patients experience greater levels of energy, which is beneficial for those who have been diagnosed with depression or anxiety.

Because heavy sativas are more uplifting and energetic, many patients find that using them during the day is the ideal way to gain confidence and a lively attitude going about their work or life. However, medical marijuana in this category can be very powerful, so do use caution when you are trying these medical marijuana strains.

Clear Sativa

Clear sativas, unlike their heavy sativa relatives, are known for having similar mental effects without a euphoric body high. For some patients, especially those diagnosed with anxiety disorders, the body effects of a heavy sativa can be overstimulating. For those folks, trying a clear sativa can be a game changer that imparts the same benefits without the added physical overstimulation.

Clear sativas, like heavy sativas, are great for daytime use because they impart energy and creativity. For patients who have a hard time finding motivation or incentive to accomplish tasks in their day-to-day lives, a clear sativa is a great way to feel euphoric and motivated without the physical effects of an intense body high.

Indica Strains

Heavy Indica

When picturing the effects of a heavy indica, imagine the goofy, couch-lock caricatures of stoners. Heavy indicas are great for providing relaxation and relief from the stress of the day. Many medical marijuana patients who consume heavy indica strains prefer to use them at night because it encourages sleep and provides moderate pain relief.

For medical marijuana patients who struggle with sleeping, nausea, and pain from a variety of medical conditions, a heavy indica strain will provide full-body effects that will wash over your body. These strains are ideal for use at night because they are a perfect segue into a deep, restful sleep.

Clear Indica

For something that isn’t quite as intense as a heavy indica strain, many patients use clear indicas. Clear indicas have all of the same benefits of a heavy indica without the intense couch-lock or physically relaxing effects. You will still be able to experience pain relief, but you won’t feel the same sedating effects.

This strain is perfect for evening use. If you want to find relief from your day or are experiencing anxiety, this strain type will calm your mind without making you exceptionally sleepy like a heavy indica. Think of a clear indica as the more functional of the two indica types.

Hybrids

A 50/50 Hybrid

A 50/50 hybrid, also known as an even hybrid, is a balanced combination of a sativa and an indica. Strains that fall into this category are all unique. While they may be an even hybrid, there are still certain characteristics of a sativa or indica that may be favored over other characteristics.

The main thing to remember about even hybrid strains is that they will differ based on patient preference. Many medical marijuana patients report that even hybrid strains are good for any time of day, and almost have an adaptogenic quality to them — if you are feeling tired, an even hybrid strain can energize you and balance out your energy levels.

Indica-Dominant Hybrid

Indica Dominant or Indica-forward hybrids are known to favor the indica qualities more than the sativa qualities in a hybrid strain. Medical marijuana patients tend to favor indica-dominant hybrids for night use, although there are some who need the full-body pain relief of an indica without the sedating effects.

An indica-dominant hybrid will feel more clear than a clear indica, mostly because it has some characteristics of a sativa. Like all hybrids, it truly depends on personal preference and what you need from your strain.

Sativa-Dominant Hybrid

Sativa-dominant hybrids are going to be somewhere between a clear sativa strain and an even hybrid strain. The body effects with a sativa-dominant hybrid should be noticeable but not overwhelming. These strains are known to have cerebral or “heady” highs with some minor body highs.

For patients who are looking for an energy boost with moderate pain relief, a sativa-dominant hybrid is a perfect strain. If you need to stay awake, this strain type is a better alternative to an indica-dominant hybrid or an even strain.

Vaping Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana can impart a variety of benefits to many of its users. Whether you have been diagnosed with depression, multiple sclerosis, or insomnia, many cannabis users find relief from their symptoms by using medical marijuana.

While using medical marijuana can help patients live happier, fuller lives, there are some downsides to smoking marijuana. Recent studies show that there are a handful of carcinogens and toxins that are found in marijuana smoke. These carcinogens and toxins can lead to respiratory complications — something that is less than desirable for medical marijuana patients. Because of this, many medical marijuana users are looking for alternatives.

One popular alternative is ingesting medical marijuana in the form of edibles; however, edibles can be unpleasant and unpredictable compared to smoking.

Perhaps the most popular alternative to traditional combustion of marijuana is vaping. While early proponents of vaping claimed that it produced a more mellow, level-headed high, there is very little research to suggest that vaping does just that. Vaping does produce less smoke, smell, and coughing fits, though.

Wandering as a Cloud: Vaping 101

Vaping has numerous benefits to regular combustion of medical marijuana. While the health benefits are not clear just yet, we want to focus on some of the peripheral benefits that will help you make an informed decision on whether vaping is the right move for you and your medical condition.

Does Vaping Smell?

For starters, vaping produces significantly less of that classic skunky smell. You can do a vape session in a room for an hour and the room might get a little hazy, but the smell will mostly be negligible. There are also plenty of strains that aren’t as “loud.”

Vaping is perfect for any situation where you need to practice discretion or you don’t want to draw attention to the fact that you are consuming medical marijuana. For medical marijuana patients who need access to their medicine immediately to relieve painful symptoms, using a vape can afford them ease of access.

What do Marijuana Vapes Taste Like?

Just like combusting medical marijuana in a joint or water pipe, the taste of your vape will largely depend on what strain of medical marijuana is used. For some, vaping medical marijuana in the form of flower will allow greater flexibility and nuance, unlocking certain terpenes that have a pleasant but not overpowering taste. Because you aren’t combusting the marijuana, you don’t get any ashy notes on your tongue.

For those that choose to vaporize distillates or concentrates, there are still some nuanced flavor profiles that you can taste. One of the most delicious and enticing examples is the Buddha’s Hand strain that is used in certain distillates. This strain, even when it is turned into pure THC/CBD distillate, is incredibly floral and smells like the tropical fruit it was named after.

What Are Some Other Benefits to Vaping Medical Marijuana?

One of the most beneficial aspects of vaping medical marijuana is that you can vape pure CBD distillate. While there isn’t an option to vape or smoke a CBD strain that only has CBD, vaping medical marijuana in the form of CBD distillate allows you to receive the benefits of CBD without feeling any of the psychoactive effects of THC.

Vaping medical marijuana can also save you money in the long run. Because the plant matter doesn’t combust, you end up using more of the cannabinoids found in the plant instead of having them turn to ash. Some people also encourage the use of making edibles with the plant material that has already been vaporized to utilize all of the possible THC and CBD.

If you are ready to experience vaping, or you want to talk to a medical marijuana professional, feel free to contact Salveo Health and Wellness in Canton, Illinois. Medical Marijuana Strains

Without further ado, here is our list of some of the best trending medical marijuana strains of 2019. Remember to use medical marijuana responsibly and to only use it if you have a valid medical marijuana card in the state of Illinois.

G6 (Jet Fuel)

For a high-powered, focused, and euphoric medical marijuana strain, you can’t go wrong with G6. This sativa-forward hybrid strain combines some incredibly potent Diesel strains to create an overall unforgettable medical marijuana experience.

When you aren’t too busy taking note of the earthy, diesel scent that this strain exudes, you’ll notice it is effective in treating conditions like depression and anxiety — and don’t worry, this strain isn’t known for causing paranoia, but do make sure to stay hydrated to avoid cotton mouth.

Cannalope Kush

Cannalope Kush is another sativa-dominant hybrid strain that affords an incredible balance between an indica and a sativa. While arguably not as energetic as G6, Cannalope Kush is known for imparting the same benefits with an underlying current of mellow indica vibes. Cannalope Kush has an unmistakably fruity and earthy scent and flavor that results in a balanced euphoria.

Cannalope Kush is effective at treating stress, depression, pain, and fatigue, although it can make some patients anxious after using it. Best to try this strain in small doses until you feel comfortable with its potent effects.

Bio-Jesus

If you are in need of pain management and are looking for opioid alternatives, be sure to try this wacky-named strain. Bio-Jesus is an indica-dominant hybrid that claims heritage from the Colorado Medical Marijuana Harvest Cup award-winning Bio-Diesel strain. Similar to G6, Bio-Jesus will have a diesel-like quality to its scent, but it also has a peppery, herbal spice flavor to it, rounding it out as an incredibly delicious strain.

Bio-Jesus is notorious for its ability to reduce inflammation and reduce certain types of pain. If you are looking for pain relief or a healthier alternative to opioids, Bio-Jesus is an effective strain that should not be ignored. The intense physical sensations patients experience come with little anxiety or paranoia, and it slowly gives way to a cerebral hazy calm that will help you manage your pain effectively.

Alien Rock Candy

The sweet, citrusy, candy-like quality of Alien Rock Candy make it a stand-out strain on our list. As a indica-dominant hybrid, this medical marijuana strain can provide you with optimal relaxation and pain relief. This strain is usually low-energy and perfect for those suffering from insomnia and general stress.

While Alien Rock Candy has some reported uplifting effects, it is mostly used as a peaceful segue into sleep. Whether you have a high-intensity job, hypertension, or insomnia, this strain is perfect for some quality rest and relaxation.

Terpenes 101

There has been an increase in attention given to the organic components of marijuana beyond tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). One of the most recently talked about element of marijuana is terpene content. If you have been following trends in health and wellness, you may have noticed that essential oils are being championed for their medicinal value. Interestingly enough, many of these essential oils contain terpenes, which are the main reason why these oils have various, although subtle, effects. Today, we are going to define terpenes as well identify what they have to do with medical marijuana and how they impact you.

Medical marijuana patients deserve access to some of the best medical marijuana products. At Salveo Health and Wellness, we take a holistic approach to treating your condition. Whether you are looking for a topical cream with CBD or need a rarer indica strain, Salveo Health and Wellness is here to help medical marijuana patients receive access to the latest and greatest the medical marijuana industry has to offer. What Are Terpenes?

If you have ever smelled the marijuana flower, or “bud,” you may have noticed a distinct smell. If you have smelled different strains of marijuana, you may have noticed that each one smells different; sometimes the differences are subtle, while other times they are extreme. Patients describe certain smells as having lots of citrus notes while others are closer to berries or lavender. This is largely in part due to the naturally-occurring terpenes in the marijuana.

Terpenes aren’t just found in marijuana. Terpenes are found in all essential oils and are the reason why certain things smell the way they do. Terpenes are a large class of organic compounds, and they can be broken down into two basic categories: monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. These two types of terpenes have different effects on the mind, and many aromatherapists have written about the subtle effects of smelling and diffusing terpenes through essential oils.

Monoterpenes include limonene (responsible for citrus-like smells in lemon, bergamot, carrot, and fennel), pinene (responsible for woodsy smells in coriander, cypress, eucalyptus, pines, and oregano), and camphene (also responsible for wood-like smells in pines, juniper, fir, and spruce). If you have ever smelled a marijuana strain like Lemon G or Cinex and immediately thought of lemons, that might be due to the high limonene content in these strains.Aromatherapists tend to note that monoterpenes provide a warming energy and sensation to the mind and skin when inhaled or applied topically.

While monoterpenes are known for their warming and energetic properties, sesquiterpenes are known for their calm and soothing effects. Sesquiterpenes are found in lavender, sage, marjoram, patchouli, chamomile, and so much more.

Terpenes and Marijuana

There have been over 100 different terpenes identified in cannabis plants, and every strain has a completely different terpene profile. The idea behind caring about terpenes in your medical marijuana is that terpenes can have synergistic interactions with cannabinoids. It is possible that terpenes help regulate and mediate our body’s interaction with other cannabinoids, meaning that each strain will have a unique effect on your body that is subtly different from another strain.

Researchers are still trying to index and identify which terpenes in marijuana, combined with the THC and CBD content, provide specific sensations or mental reactions. For example, marijuana strains with a high linalool content (linalool can be found in basil, lavender, thyme, ginger, and oregano, just to name a few) may induce greater levels or relaxation, while strains with high levels of limonene can impart a feeling of elevated mood.

Terpenes for Sale

You can purchase essential oils, which include a whole host of terpenes in them, and then diffuse the oils so you can feel the impact of the terpenes. You can also feel the impact of certain terpenes when you ingest medical marijuana. The analysis and development of terpene identification in marijuana has brought a new level of horticulture and awareness of the effects of marijuana.

If you are in the Canton, Illinois area, and you are a medical marijuana patient looking to experience the positive, synergistic effects of terpenes in marijuana, be sure to visit Salveo Health and Wellness. Our staff will help find the right strain for you and your medical condition. Visit our website today to learn more.

The first medical cannabis crops have been harvested, however the state of Illinois is still working through the final steps of bringing the program online including third-party testing of the medicine. The state has made it known that once it has completed its processes it will announce a state-wide start date, and has projected that this date will be in the next couple of weeks.

Though these delays have been unfortunate we hope that a few growing pains at the start of the medical cannabis program will mean fewer unexpected problems in the future. We are in the home stretch now, and cannot wait to serve you.

Medical Cannabis Availability Update

Salveo Health & Wellness will NOT have medicine available on Monday, November 2nd. We are ready to open, and growers have medicine available to ship, but the state is not ready to give them the go-ahead. It appears, based on the following post from the Illinois Department of Public Health, that the state will let everyone know a date by which dispensaries will be able to start serving patients.

Sorry for the delay, but it is 100% out of our control. We will continue to update this website and our Facebook page with additional information. As always, feel free to call us at 309-647-9333.

Please be advised that the State of Illinois will soon announce a state-wide start date for sales of medical cannabis at registered dispensaries. At this time, the Department of Public Health requests that qualifying patients and caregivers DO NOT CALL for information about when dispensaries will begin sales. An announcement will be posted on the website for the Illinois Medical Cannabis Pilot Program as well as the website for the Department of Public Health
